Ford has acquired Quantum Signal, a Saline, Michigan, mobile robotics company, which helped the military develop software that allowed it to remotely control robotic vehicles from thousands of miles away. The transaction should help advance Ford’s goal of launching a self-driving vehicle business, including software development and hardware prototyping.

Quantum Signal has experience in real-time simulation and algorithm development for its transportation as a service platform, as well as vehicle controls that support the customer experience, functional safety and other vehicle systems.

Ford purchased SAIPS, an Isreali machine learning company, almost three years ago, which is working closely with Ford and the team at Argo AI on developing autonomous vehicle technology. In the time since, SAIPS has more than doubled in size to approximately 30 people and moved into new headquarters in Tel Aviv. Ford hopes to duplicate that success with Quantum Signal.
