The Smart Business Dealmakers Dealmaker of the Year Awards recognize exceptional individuals who are shaping the landscape of business and innovation in Detroit.

In addition, The Detroit Dealmakers Hall of Fame recognized a class of dealmakers that has made an often-groundbreaking impact on their organizations, industries and the region over the course of decades in business.

We celebrated the accomplishments of the 2026 class of winners on April 9 at the Detroit Smart Business Dealmakers Conference. Together, they provide a strong picture of the Detroit business community.


Dealmaker of the Year Honorees

 

Corey Geer, CEO, ATLAS Space Operations. Under Corey’s leadership, ATLAS strengthened its role in the evolving space communications market, delivering innovative solutions and creating meaningful value for investors and strategic partners. In 2025, Corey guided ATLAS through its acquisition by York Space Systems, marking a significant milestone in the company’s trajectory. Prior to the exit, he led a Series C funding round to fuel rapid expansion, positioning the business to triple its revenue.

 

Ethan Linkner, Managing Partner; and Josh Tolman, Managing Partner, Mudita Venture Partners. Founded in 2022, and based in Birmingham, Michigan, Mudita has rapidly built an impressive track record with 26 Investments and multiple exits across the two funds. Mudita is a old Sanskirt term that means "find great joy in other people's success". And living up to its name, they actively invest in AI-first early & growth stage companies aimed at the future of work and also do good for the world. Their investments include notable names like APG (8x exit in 3 years); K1x (44x exit in 4 years), Chatterworks, Trellis, i-Genie, Koda Health, Mav, NQS, Pavewise, and Trajektory, among many others. Coming fresh off a 44X exit earlier this quarter, and $165 in AUM, Mudita continues to fuel innovation while creating "Mudita" across the technology ecosystem. Congratulations, Ethan and Josh! 

 

Deepak Menon, Founder and CEO, Micro-LAM. Since founding the company in 2012, Deepak has built Micro-LAM into a leader in micro-laser-assisted machining technology, enhancing precision and productivity in optics and diamond tool manufacturing. Under his direction, Micro-LAM also expanded through strategic partnerships and acquisitions, positioning the company at the forefront of next-generation manufacturing solutions. In 2025, Deepak led the company through its $102 million acquisition by IDEX.

 

Michael Petix, Partner, M-Tech Dealership Management. Through disciplined deal execution and market insight, Michael is helping establish M-Tech as a growing force in equipment dealership consolidation. Since helping form the company, Michael has played a key role in executing a targeted acquisition strategy, completing multiple operating company and property transactions. Last year, he led M-Tech’s first direct investment with the acquisition of Mark’s Outdoor Power Equipment, a long-standing Michigan business, along with its prime real estate. Congratulations, Michael! 

 

Bruce Smith, Owner, Chairman and CEO, Voltava (Formerly: Detroit Manufacturing Systems). Since acquiring what was then Detroit Manufacturing Systems in 2018, Bruce has executed a strategic vision centered on expansion, operational excellence and value creation. Under his leadership, Voltava has strengthened its role as a critical partner to global automotive OEMs while significantly expanding its capabilities and long-term impact. Earlier this year, Bruce secured $610 million in acquisition financing, supporting the company’s continued growth following its acquisitions of Avancez (Assembly and Android Industries).

 

Stephane Vedie, CEO, LUXIT Group. Stephane has guided LUXIT through six strategic acquisitions over the past several years while maintaining strong operational performance and positioning the automotive lighting company to reach $300 million in revenue. Most recently, he led the acquisition of Plastico Gigante in Mexico through a patient, relationship-driven process and a creative deal structure. Within one year of the deal, the operation has doubled its revenue, highlighting Stephane’s ability to tackle complex cross-border transactions and drive value creation in an evolving industry.


Social Impact Award

 

Carolyn Cassin, CEO, Michigan Women Forward. Under Carolyn’s direction, Michigan Women Forward has evolved into a statewide force dedicated to advancing financial independence and business ownership. As a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), Michigan Women Forward is able to provide critical access to capital for women and BIPOC [BY-POCK] entrepreneurs, helping bridge longstanding funding gaps. In addition to her work with Michigan Women Forward, Carolyn has co-founded three venture funds—Belle, Belle Michigan, and Belle Michigan Impact Fund—that combined have invested in nearly 50 women owned businesses. Through strategic partnerships, investment and advocacy, Carolyn and her team have helped fuel small business growth, build generational wealth, and strengthen communities across Michigan. Her work continues to create pathways for inclusive economic development and results in lasting social impact.


Dealmakers Hall of Fame Honorees

 

Joe Anderson. Joe is the Chairman and CEO of TAG Holdings. He is a West Point graduate and decorated Army veteran who served with distinction in Vietnam, earning multiple honors including two Silver Stars. Following his military service, he built a successful corporate career with General Motors before transitioning to entrepreneurship, leading and growing multiple companies across manufacturing, technology and industrial sectors. As majority owner of TAG Holdings, Joe has developed a diverse portfolio serving automotive, aerospace and defense industries. His influence extends beyond business through board leadership roles and civic involvement, including past service with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago-Detroit Branch and the U.S. Department of Commerce Manufacturing Council.

 

Andy Appleby. Andy is the Chairman and CEO of General Sports & Entertainment, and Founder of the USPBL. With more than 40 years of experience, Andy has built, acquired and grown successful franchises and platforms, including Derby County Football Club and the Fort Wayne Wizards. In 2015, he launched the United States Professional Baseball League, creating a unique, privately funded model that has drawn more than two million fans and supported hundreds of community organizations. His vision has combined business success with community engagement and player development, with 52 of his players being signed by MLB teams and & making it all the way to the big leagues. From his leadership with Palace Sports & Entertainment to founding General Sports, Appleby’s career reflects innovation, hard work, dealmaking excellence and a commitment to creating enduring value in sports and beyond.

 

Peter Karmanos Jr. Peter has made transformative impact on the technology sector and city of Detroit. He is the Founder and Chairman of Resolute Building Intelligence, which is a data-driven building performance software company, and best known as the co-founder and former CEO of Compuware. A visionary entrepreneur, Peter helped build Compuware into a high-growth software leader, achieving sustained success through innovation and disciplined execution. In 2002, he made a bold decision to relocate the company’s headquarters to downtown Detroit, playing a key role in the city’s revitalization and reinforcing his commitment to community and economic development. Beyond business, Peter has made a lasting mark in professional sports as the former owner of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and through his support of youth hockey. His philanthropic efforts, particularly in advancing cancer research, reflect a deep commitment to giving back.
