Edge Case Research Inc. recently raised $8 million in venture funding from undisclosed investors, PitchBook reports. The Pittsburgh company, which has raised $15 million to date, is developing vehicle safety systems intended to make autonomous vehicles safe.

Edge Case Research’s prior seed investors include Ansys, Chris Urmson, Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures, Lockheed Martin Ventures, Trucks Venture Capital and BlueTree Allied Angels, according to PitchBook.

The company is led by CEO Mike Wagner, who founded Edge Case Research with CTO Philip Koopman, an internationally recognized expert on autonomous vehicle safety who has worked in that area at Carnegie Mellon University for over 20 years. Wagner’s experience with autonomous vehicles began nearly 20 years ago at CMU. He built lunar rovers for Red Whittaker, autonomous scientific robots that explored Antarctica and self-driving technology for tackling harsh off road terrain.
