R&D Coatings, which operates in Pittsburgh, has been acquired by Universal Woods LLC, a portfolio company of Capital Partners.

R&D Coatings is a coatings manufacturer that specializes in the formulation, development and manufacturing of UV and EB curable finishes for commercial industrial coating applications.

Originally founded in 1970 and headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Universal Woods manufactures of hard-surface coated substrates for image sublimation and mezzanine decking and distributes them worldwide.

The M&A Advisory firm Copper Run served as the exclusive sell-side adviser to R&D Coatings, with Andy Hays, Matt Roberts and Jonathan Anderson working the transaction.

“Copper Run did a great job representing R&D Coatings,” R&D Coatings President Buster Weinzerl said, in a statement. “Matt’s daily monitoring and coordinating was phenomenal. Copper Run helped us to achieve a conclusion that was more than what we had originally expected.”

Copper Run is headquartered in Columbus, with offices in Cincinnati and Cleveland.

Connecticut-based PE firm Capital Partners has invested in more than 100 platform and add-on acquisitions since 1982. The firm focuses primarily on manufacturers, value-added distributors and business service companies.
